I AM Statements: Bread of Life

John 6:26-58

A Woman Shoots Her Husband For Stepping On The
Clean Floor… A police officer jumps into his squad
car and calls the station. “I have an interesting
case here,” he says. “A woman shot her husband
for stepping on the floor she just mopped.” “Have
you arrested her?” asks the sergeant. “No, not yet.
The floor’s still wet.”

Last week we started our series discussing the I AM
statements of Jesus. We talked about how Jesus was
both fully God and fully man at the same time.
The statement we studied wasn’t one of the 7 statements
found in John, but it’s important because it sets the tone
for the rest of these sayings.
We discussed His Pre-existence, He was with God in
the beginning.
His Incarnation, He humbled Himself to come to earth
His Divinity, He is God, the second person of the trinity.
The point being that Jesus IS God in the flesh.

We are going to look at the first official I AM
statement of Jesus.

John 6:26-58

If there is one thing that should stand out to you as you
study this text, it is that Jesus came to give eternal
life to all who would believe in Him.
That’s the sermon in a sentence.
Today we are going to see 6 Truths that relate directly
back to that one statement.

The crowd followed Jesus because they had just seen
Him feed 5,000 men with a few loaves and fish.
But they have gotten hungry again, so they searched
until they found Him, hoping that He would do it again.

Jesus was explaining to them how they could have
eternal life by contrasting spiritual food with physical food.

Jesus is Spiritual Food which is greater than
Physical Food.

He was describing the difference between the temporary
nature of physical food and the permanent nature of
spiritual food.
Physical food requires you to work for it constantly. Even
after you eat of if you get hungry again
Spiritual food is what satisfies the longing of our souls.
Every person has a deep longing to be filled. Only God
can fill up that hole. Jesus is the bread that satisfies.
Those who believe in Him will never be hungry.

Jesus is the Gift and the Giver

V.27 mentions the food “which the Son of Man will give
to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”

Jesus is going to give them the gift of eternal life.
To gain a fuller understanding of this verse, we need to
turn back to John 3:33-36: “He who has received His
testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true.
For He whom God has sent speaks the words of
God’ He gives the Spirit without measure. The
Father loves the Son and has given all things into
His hand. He who believes in the Son has eternal
life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see
life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

God sent Jesus to the world to be the gift of salvation to
all who would believe.
In our passage in John 6 there are 6 instances
mentioning Jesus coming from heaven.
And we also know that Jesus and God are one.

Jesus Requires Faith, not Works

The crowd questioned Him on how they should work the
works of God. Jesus redirected them by telling them it
was not even work at all, God wants them to believe in
the One He sent, Jesus! The work was completed by
Jesus on the cross at Calvary.

Eternal life isn’t something we can earn.
It’s not about our good deeds.
We definitely don’t deserve it.
It requires faith!

Jesus is the true bread from heaven
They ask Jesus to perform a sign. How quickly they
forgot how He fed the 5,000 in that miraculous display of
God’s power.
Jesus tells them He came to bring them life.
He is the bread from heaven.
He is better than the bread their fathers ate in the
wilderness.
They had to eat of it every day and they got hungry
again.
Jesus gives life to the world.
V.33 for the bread of God is that which comes down out
of heaven, and gives life to the world.

Jesus Provides Sustenance

Focus verse V.35
I am the bread of life, he who comes to Me will not
hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.

Jesus satisfies

Again, it’s about eternal life.
We all know people who are looking to fill up the void.
They try every way they know how.

Drugs, sexual immorality, alcohol, power, position, etc.
None of it satisfies.
The thing people are looking for is Jesus.
Without Him, there is no satisfaction.
Without Him, there is no hope.
Jesus Fulfills the Will of God
V.39-40

Jesus came to do the will of the Father.

● Care for Believers Entrusted to Him
● Raise Believers up on the Last Day
● Provide Eternal Life

Jesus took great care of those God entrusted to Him.
You can see His High Priestly prayer recorded in John 17

His purpose was to seek and save that which was lost.
And all who believe in Him will be raised up on the last
day and reconciled to God.

It was God’s plan from before the foundation of the world
for Jesus to come and bring God’s free gift of eternal life.

APPLICATION

Our application this morning can be summed up in two
simple words

Be Satisfied

If you are still searching for something to fill the void in
your life, allow Jesus to fill that void.
He alone can fill you up.
There is no substitute for Jesus.

People will try to tell you that drugs, alcohol,
relationships, etc will satisfy what you are missing, but
it’s only Jesus who satisfies.

If you already know Him, let Him have complete control
over your life! Give Him the reins and allow Him to guide
your steps. Surrender control to Him and He will lead
you where He wants you to go.
