Mom Quotes
Silence is golden. Unless you have kids. Then
silence is suspicious.
Licked a dark smear off my finger and then
thought, “Phew, it’s chocolate!”
Russian roulette, mom style
I don’t want to sleep like a baby. I want to sleep
like my husband.
He doesn’t even wake up when the baby cries.
When your “mom voice” is so loud even the
neighbors brush their teeth and get dressed.
Today we are going to take a look at some of the mothers
of the Bible and see what lessons we can learn from
them.
Every mom is different. And none are perfect, but God is
always at work.
The first mom we are going to look at is:
Sarah
Sarah gave birth to Isaac when she was 90 years old.
She was barren but God promised Abraham that he
would multiply him greatly and that he would be the
father of many nations.
Sarah didn’t immediately believe God’s promise would be
fulfilled. In fact, she encouraged Abraham to sleep with
her handmaid Hagar.
Sarah laughed when she heard that she was going to
bear a child in her old age.
Genesis 18:13 “The Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did
Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child,
now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the
Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you,
about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a
son.’”
It seemed impossible, but the first lesson for us to
remember is that nothing is too difficult for God.
Genesis 21:1-2 “The Lord visited Sarah as he had
said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.
And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his
old age at the time of which God had spoken to
him.”
And the second lesson we should remember is when
God makes a promise, He is faithful to keep it.
Our second mom this morning is:
Jochebed
Jochebed was the mother of Aaron, Moses and Miriam.
If you remember, the king of Egypt told the Hebrew
midwives to kill all the baby boys that were born of the
Israelite women.
By the grace of God the midwives disobeyed the king and
Moses was born.
Exodus 2:1-10
Jochebed could only hide Moses for so long so she put
him in a basket and put him in the Nile river by the reeds
by the river bank.
Isn’t it amazing that Pharaoh’s daughter had mercy on
him?
And we see the providence of God which reunited
Moses with his mother for a few years.
She protected her son and later was able to nurse him
and love on him and care for him.
The lesson here is that even when we can’t see God at
work, He is always working to accomplish His plan.
Our third mom is:
Hannah
Hannah was barren and her husband also had another
wife that was not barren. And this woman enjoyed
provoking Hannah because she couldn’t bear any
children.
Hannah was extremely sad, but in her sorrow, she called
out to the Lord in prayer.
I Samuel 1:11-20
She prayed with such faith and feverency as so many
mothers and grandmothers do. And God gave her a son.
The lesson here is that God knows our heart when we
pray.
Hannah promised that if God would give her a son she
would give him back to God to serve Him.
Hannah honored her promise and brought Samuel to the
house of the Lord to Eli.
Hannah kept her vow to the Lord and even worshiped the
Lord when she brought Samuel to serve the Lord.
Have you ever made a deal with God?
When we make those deals God knows if we have any
intentions of keeping our end of the bargain or not.
He is never fooled by our empty promises.
Our last mom may surprise you a bit.
Rahab
Joshua 2:1-15
What this mother teaches us is that our worth is not
determined by our past actions.
Rahab may have been a prostitute, but she was used by
God to protect the spies.
Not only that, she was also part of the lineage of Jesus.
Matthew 1:5-6 “and Salmon the father of Boaz by
Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and
Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of
David the king.”
Isn’t it incredible that God uses people despite our
previous failures? We don’t have to be perfect, just
obedient.
Also, Rahab made it to the Hall of Faith.
Hebrews 11:31 “By faith Rahab the prostitute did
not perish with those who were disobedient,
because she had given a friendly welcome to the
spies.”
So, what do we take away from these four women’s
stories this morning?
APPLICATION
No two mothers are the same.
God loves us all equally.
Each of these mothers had obstacles in their lives.
They didn’t have to overcome them on their own.
They had to trust God and be aware of His
providence.
Motherhood is not for the faint of heart.
The good news is that God loves you moms and He is
always working things for the good of those who love Him
and are called according to His purpose.
Will you join Him where He is at work?
