Philippians 1:27-30
Several years ago, a quiet neighborhood started
experiencing a string of break‐ins. Nothing dramatic at
first — a stolen bike, a rummaged‐through car, a missing
package. But over time, the tension grew. People were
nervous. Parents kept their kids inside. Neighbors
stopped talking as much. Everyone felt unsettled.
One evening, an older gentleman named Mr. Harris
walked door to door and invited the whole neighborhood
to meet in his driveway. No agenda. No speeches. Just a
chance to talk.
When everyone gathered, he said something simple:
“We can’t stop trouble from coming, but we can decide
how we respond to it.”
He encouraged the neighbors to do three things:
First, he said, “Let’s each commit to living like good
neighbors — watching out for one another, being aware,
being responsible.”
Then he said, “Let’s work together. One person can’t
watch the whole neighborhood, but all of us can.”
Finally, he said, “And let’s not be afraid. We’re stronger
when we stand together.”
Over the next few months, something changed.
People started talking again.
They checked on each other.
They shared information.
They looked out for the elderly and the kids.
And the break‐ins stopped — not because the
neighborhood became perfect, but because the people in
it remembered who they were, stood together, and
refused to live in fear.
Philippians 1:27-30
In these four verses Paul provides application for
Christian living to the church at Philippi. The great part is
that the application is relevant for us today. It’s one of
those universal truths from God’s word.
Paul provides three areas for the church at Philippi to
consider.
Paul first address their;
Conduct
The phrase manner of life is a translation of the Greek
word translated citizenship. What Paul means is that the
Christians in Philippi should be conducting themselves as
citizens of heaven.
Even though they are living in Philippi they are only
sojourners there. Their true citizenship is in heaven.
Paul says it makes no difference if he comes to see them
or he remains in prison, they must conduct themselves in
a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.
Remember what Paul wrote back in verse 18, that he
would rejoice that Christ is proclaimed, whether in
pretense or in truth.
The gospel is that Christ died for our sins, was buried and
God raised Him from the dead on the 3rd day!
The church must be a living testimony of the Good News.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 3:2-3 “You yourselves are
our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to
be known and read by all. And you show that you are a
letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink
but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of
stone, but on tablets of human hearts.”
Only with the help of the Holy Spirit can we conduct
ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.
We must also remember that the conduct Paul is referring
to is not the reason for their salvation, but a result of it.
Paul taught in Ephesians that we are saved by grace
through faith not by works so that none can boast.
Our works come after our salvation out of gratitude for
our salvation.
What does the community think of Silver Creek Baptist
Church?
Is our conduct worthy of the gospel of Christ?
Are we loving our neighbors as ourselves?
How can we be a living testimony of the gospel?
Next, Paul encourages their;
Cooperation
Paul expects the church to be united – he wants to hear
that they are standing firm in one spirit with one mind.
That’s how the body of Christ should function.
United in purpose and function.
Many churches have infighting.
People trying to do jobs that don’t belong to them.
The body of Christ is one body with many members.
Each member has a purpose and function.
Without every member exercising their spiritual gifts the
body can’t function properly.
Paul wants to see the church united in mind and spirit.
Standing firm fighting against the evil forces not righting
against each other.
He wants to see them striving side by side for the faith of
the gospel.
The word striving is used both for soldiers and athletes.
It means working together for success.
In both sports and military teamwork is critical for
success.
Every person needs to fill their role.
As a church we have the same goal – to reach the lost
with the good news of the gospel.
We are all on the same team – Team Jesus!
We have the same enemy, satan and his minions.
We don’t need to be fighting against one another, we
need to be striving side by side with one another.
Church cooperation is about unity and discipleship.
When we stand united we coach up the newer believers
as the mature believers come alongside and do ministry
together with them.
Is our church united in purpose?
Are we serving together to share the gospel with the
lost?
Are we joining together to fight against the evil one?
Finally, Paul encourages their;
Confidence
Paul tells the Philippians that they do not have to be
frightened by any of their opponents.
No Fear
This is a good reminder for all Christians.
We have nothing to fear.
Plus, God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power
and love and self-control.
Also, Paul encourages the church about their true
spiritual state.
Unbelievers are destined for destruction and eternal
separation from God.
Salvation
Believers receive salvation when they trust Jesus to
forgive them of their sins and believe that He is the Son
of God.
Paul writes that it has been granted to them that they
should not only believe in Christ, but also suffer for His
sake.
The word granted can also mean graced – to give freely
or graciously as a favor – O’Brien.
What was granted was their
Belief and Suffering
Suffering doesn’t sound like a gift but believers should
expect to suffer for their belief in Christ.
Paul told Timothy “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly
life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,” 2 Timothy 3:12
Jesus told his disciples “I have said these things to you,
that in me you may have peace. In the world you will
have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the
world.” John 16:33
The good news is that Jesus has overcome the world.
Remember what Paul wrote to the church at Corinth.
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your
sting?
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through
our Lord Jesus Christ.” I Corinthians 15:55-57
We have confidence knowing that Christ has won the
victory.
No matter what we go through on this earth, we will be
with Him forever and ever in heaven.
What a great reminder and encouragement.
APPLICATION
Live out our Faith
We should be writing out testimony by the life we live.
Do people see Christ in us?
Serve Together
As the body of Christ we are all on the same team.
We have the same goal and the same enemy.
We are stronger together
The story is told of a man who had several sons who
were always squabbling. Their disunity was hurting the
family business on which they all depended for their
livelihood. The father called his sons together and handed
a thin bamboo cane to the strongest of them. “Snap that
cane,” the old man said. Thinking his father had taken
leave of his senses, the young man complied. The old
man tied two thin bamboo canes together. “Snap these,”
he said. Again the young man had no difficulty. The
father kept adding more and more canes to the bundle.
Soon the son was sweating and straining to snap them
and before long he found the task completely beyond his
strength. Singly or in small bundles the canes could be
snapped easily, but united the canes had more strength
than the young man had. The object lesson needed no
comment.
Welcome the Suffering
Christians have nothing to fear.
Jesus has overcome the world.
No matter what we have to endure on earth, we can be
confident that suffering produces endurance, and
endurance produces character, and character produces
hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy
Spirit who has been given to us.” Romans 5:3-5
We have nothing to fear.
Suffering just brings us closer to God.
